Religious Education 2012-13

The 2012-13 school year is now in full swing and all of Christ the King's catechists are settling in for a great year of Religious Education for all of our parishioners. Thank you all for your patience – we know that the updates to the website are long overdue. Our DRE, Barbara Morgan, had some serious health problems in August and September, but is now fully recovered and ready to dive back in to working for our parish. Thank you all for your prayers for her quick and full recovery!

Religious Education at Christ the King provides you the opportunity to develop your relationship with God in the context of a Catholic community. Religious Education at Christ the King is for everyone from the "cradle to the grave". The programs provide opportunities for everyone to grow deeper in the Faith and push forward the mission of the parish and the wider Church.

Religious education also includes our help for those who are not Catholic but are interested in pursuing a relationship with the Roman Catholic Church. We do that through evangelism, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and Children, and by helping new Catholics get deeper into our parish life, (the Neophyte year).

In addition to programs for non-Catholics, religious education includes opportunities for enthusiastic young adults to pursue their Catholic life in a stronger and deeper way ("Theology on Tap," and “The Upper Room” for example) Brad Schmidt (bschmidt@ctkcc.net) will be responsible for our young adult offerings. Brad is also the youth minister for Christ the King and there he takes care of grades 9-12 through evangelism, catechesis and social and outreach opportunities.

Religious Education also encompasses grades 1-8 with substantive and vibrant First Penance, First Eucharist and Confirmation programs. We provide Liturgy of the Word for Children on Sundays for ages 3-5 and grades K-2. Religious Education at CTK also includes the Baptism preparation for the parents of infants. Plans are underway for more catechesis for teens through a series of seminars throughout the year. Keep your eyes open for more information on these seminars in the next couple of months!

Barbara Morgan, Director of Religious Education
Professor Barbara Morgan has recently come back to Christ the King to serve as the Director of Religious Education (DRE). Barbara was DRE at Christ the King thirty years ago when it became a parish. She left to finish a Masters degree in Catechetics from the Notre Dame Institute in for Catechetics in Arlington, VA. There, she received her Advanced Apostolic Catechetical Diploma. After finishing her studies, Barbara founded the Catechetics program at the Franciscan University of Steubenville where she taught from 1994-2005.

In addition to her work at FUS, Barbara has authored and co-authored several books on Catechetics. She retired from FUS in 2005 and moved back to Ann Arbor to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Christ the King is blessed to have her back as the Director of Religious Education after a long absence and we look forward to seeing what improvements she will bring to our religious education programs.

Maryn Hasey, Assistant to the DRE
Maryn Hasey serves as Barbara Morgan's secretary and assistant. Maryn grew up in the parish of Christ the King and is happy to be serving there as Barbara's assistant. She and her husband, Jonathan, are members of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ypsilanti where her husband is the Music Director. They have two children under two years old, so Maryn works part-time and mostly from home, which is why you won't find her in the office most days. E-mail is the best way to get in touch with her, but if you'd like her phone number, just ask!

Tree of Life

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas and her feast day is December 12th. In this year of patriotism, we pray to Our Lady of Guadalupe to bless our country. Her miraculous appearance to St. Juan Diego is an inspiring story and the image she left behind is extraordinary in many ways:

"It's believed that the word Guadalupe was actually a Spanish mis-translation of the local Aztec dialect. The word that Mary probably used was Coatlallope which means "one who treads on snakes"! Within six years of this apparition, six million Aztecs had converted to Catholicism. The tilma shows Mary as the God-bearer - she is pregnant with her Divine Son. Since the time the tilma was first impressed with a picture of the Mother of God, it has been subject to a variety of environmental hazards including smoke from fires and candles, water from floods and torrential downpours and, in 1921, a bomb which was planted by anti-clerical forces on an altar under it. There was also a cast-iron cross next to the tilma and when the bomb exploded, the cross was twisted out of shape, the marble altar rail was heavily damaged and the tilma was...untouched! Indeed, no one was injured in the Church despite the damage that occurred to a large part of the altar structure.

In 1977, the tilma was examined using infrared photography and digital enhancement techniques. Unlike any painting, the tilma shows no sketching or any sign of outline drawn to permit an artist to produce a painting. Further, the very method used to create the image is still unknown. The image is inexplicable in its longevity and method of production. It can be seen today in a large cathedral built to house up to ten thousand worshipers. It is, by far, the most popular religious pilgrimage site in the Western Hemisphere."
