Christ the King--New Translation of the Roman Missal

The Roman Missal, Third Edition, the ritual text containing prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass, has been approved by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. First use of the new text of the new Roman Missal will be on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011.

Pope John Paul II announced a revised version of the Missale Romanum during the Jubilee Year 2000. Among other things, the revised edition of the Missale Romanum contains prayers for the observances of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Votive Masses and Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (instructions) for the celebration of the Mass. At around the same time, new Vatican directives for translation promoted a more literal and formal translation of the texts from Latin into the vernacular. The result is a text that is more faithful to the original Latin, with more Scriptural allusions and a more dignified style.

This wonderful and faithful new translation will affect many of the texts for the people and the Presider during Mass. Over the coming months, we will be providing information, resources, and presentations to help us prepare for the new texts. Once each month from now through November there will be a bulletin insert detailing some aspect of the new translation; these resources will be posted on this website as well.

This isn't just a change that is happening at Christ the King, or even in the Diocese of Lansing. The new translation will be implemented in every parish in the United States on November 27, 2011.

We are excited about these changes, but recognize that there are a lot of questions that people will have. In an effort to ensure that we're covering the topics you're most interested in, and answering the questions that you have, we will be building a "frequently asked questions" section of this site.

We'll also use your questions to help us direct the types of teaching at Christ the King over the next several months. Though we may not have the answers to all of your questions right at this moment, we will as we get closer to November 27.
