THE CARMELITE CHARISM #8
Carmelite Reference Resources, Part 3
We continue with the list that includes other excellent books written that cover different
aspects of Carmelite spirituality.
John Paul II, Pope. Faith According to Saint John of the Cross. San Francisco: Ignatius, 1981.
This book actually is Pope John Paul II's doctoral dissertation, given to the Faculty of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome
while he was still Karol Wojtyla. The Pope has long been involved with Carmelite prayer and spirituality.
LePak, Fr. Roy C. A Theology of Christian Mystical Experience. Washington, D.C.: University Press of America, 1977.
This is another doctoral dissertation. It was done for the Faculty of Theology of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland.
Its focus is on the nature of infused contemplation in the teachings of St. John of the Cross.
This would be a more detailed, academic approach to contemplation, for those who are interested in a more analytic, academic, perspective.
Rohrbach, Peter Thomas. Conversation with Christ. Rockford: Tan Publishing, 1982.
This book, which has been reprinted many times since it was first published in 1956,
is one of the more popular works on prayer according to the teachings of St. Teresa of Jesus.
There are also several useful books that deal specifically with the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites.
They are part of a series called the Growth in Carmel Series:
Griffin, Fr. Michael, O.C.D. A Commentary on the Rule of Life. Washington, D.C.: Teresian Charism Press, 1981.
This book discusses the rule of life that the Third Order Discalced Carmelite members live.
The book also includes a short history of the Third Order by Fr. Otilio Rodriguez, O.C.D.
Welcome to Carmel A Handbook for Aspirants to the Discalced Carmelite Secular Order. Washington, D.C.: Teresian Charism Press, 1990.
This book is a collection of articles written on different aspects of the Third Order written for folks considering joining the Third Order.
