18 couples convalidate marriage

BAU - On 28 June, 18 couples had their marriages convalidated in St Patrick’s Church, Kpg Krokong. They were blessed by Fr Joseph Chai after a weekend’s convalidation course.

During Fr Louis’ time, those who were baptized could not have their marriages blessed as long as their spouses were not yet baptized. This had resulted in marriages which were solemnised only according to the Adat Bidayuh.

Many of these couples at the June ceremony were already married for some years and have children. Since their marriages had not been blessed the baptized partner could not receive Holy Communion, and Confirmation.

After the convalidation, the community gathered to celebrate a fellowship lunch. It was a joyful occasion for all of them. They even had a common wedding cake - each couple took turns to cut the cake and the spouses fed each other a mouthful of the cake!
