Flags in the city were flying at half-staff Tuesday in remembrance of
Florence Hoinski.
The retired town clerk was remembered fondly by former co-workers as a
saintly diplomat who never refused a person in need, and who gave of her
time and from her pocketbook to support dozens of local organizations.
Hoinski passed away Sunday at age 80. She retired in 1997 after 16 years
as town clerk having also served the previous seven years a assistant town
clerk.
Mayor Nancy Valentine called Hoinski a grandmother figure who always
brightened up City Hall with her smile.
“She always had a friendly smile, always lent a helping hand,” Valentine
said. “She was a pillar of strength in the community and it was a
privilege to have know her and to have worked with her.”
Valentine said she was shocked and saddened when she heard about Hoinski’s
passing.
“We had a relationship preceding my political years here, “Valentine said.
“but no matter what time of day, or what she was doing, she would always
have the same happy reception.”
Besides her City Hall duties, Hoinski served on the Board of Alderman and
volunteered at St. Joseph’s Church where she was a long time communicant.
She also was active with the Polish Falcons Nest 767 and local historical
societies. |
