DUO

How often can you remember twins, seniors,
having an impact on a high school girls’ basketball team, and one is a
boy?
Guard Marta Skoniecki is averaging 16.5
points for Ansonia’s girls (3-3). Math whiz Jacob Skoniecki is handling
all the statistics for the team and keeps the score book for away games.
Jacob, who doesn’t play organized sports,
started doing the stats for the volleyball team in 1998. Marta also plays
volleyball.
"I found that stas in the past weren’t
exactly kept that well here," Ansonia coach Tom Capello said. "We needed
someone competent who was good with numbers and had some knowledge of
basketball.
"Jake is a computer genius. He traveled
with the volleyball team and did their stats. So when he came to me and I
was introduced to him, I was thrilled when he said he wanted to do our
stats. Anytime I want a team stat or individual stat, all i have to do is
check Jake’s stat sheet and the information is always there and updated."
Capello said Jacob also helps out in the
audio visual department, so he has arranged for someone to help film the
team’s games.
Marta and Jacob have always been very
close.
"We were born 3 minutes apart: he was
first," Marta said, "But a lot of people don’t even know we’re twins
because we don’t look alike. He’s 6-3 and I’m 5-81/2. When we were little,
we couldn’t live without each other.
:He turned out to be a computer geek. He’s
really great with numbers and math. But it’s nice to have my brother at
games. He doesn’t really cheer much during games, but it’s nice to know
he’s there supporting me."
Although she scores about one-third of the
team’s points, Marta said she doesn’t feel pressure.
"If I shoot and miss, I know someone will
be there to rebound,: she said. "We have other scorers and players who
play good defense, Krystal (McNeil),Courtney (Southard),Kelly (Finnucan),
Tracy (Miller) or Alicia (Mott) can come through if I have an off night."
Capello said the Chargers wouldn’t be
nearly as competitive without Marta.
"If Marta wasn’t on our team, we’d be just
hoping to win a game here and there," Capello said. "In addition to being
my best scorer, she’s a good rebounder and plays great defense.
"She’s a touch passer, which is very rare
on this level. And she’s very quick to the basket. Her athleticism does
the trick for her. she gets a lot of points off the defense on our
transition."
If Marta’s varsity basketball career ends
in high school, she won’t be disappointed. Her priority after high school
is preparing for a medical career. She plans to major in premed and is
applying to the University of Connecticut, New York University and Boston
College.
"The three schools I’m considering have
top-notch premed programs and that’s what is important to me," she said.
"I know if I go to a place like UCONN, I’ve got little chance to make that
varsity basketball team. Playing intramural basketball would be just as
good."
Teammate Miller said Marta excels because
of her work ethic.
I’ve played basketball with Marta since
seventh grade, "Miller said, "She works hard every game and sets a good
example for everyone."
The Chargers’ next game is at 7 p.m.
Tuesday at Naugatuck Valley League foe Seymour ranked fifth in the
Connecticut Starters poll.
"After each game she asks me how she did,"
said Jacob, who plans to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and major
in information technology. "I’ll ask her why she missed a particular lay
up or a block. I just like watching her play. I do the stats and score
book because she’s on the team. I wanted to be part of that.
"And because I love math it’s fun to do the
stats. I’m actually setting up a computer program to make it easy for
whoever takes over for me next year. The program will allow us to file
away stats after every season.
"It gets suspenseful being there every game
because I want them to win every game."
Capello said the one aspect of Marta’s game
he’d like to see improve is her leadership.
"She is very modes, so it’s hard for her to
impose her will out there," Capello said, "I’ve told her she’s our horse."
Marta is hoping to reach 1,000 career
points this season. "The problem is no one seems to know exactly how many
she needs to get there.
"She’s got over 800 points, but we’re still
trying to figure out what her exact total was coming into this season, "Capello
said.
