Local Beginnings

The Knights of Columbus is an international organization of Catholic gentlemen.  We are dedicated to serving our church and our communities.  We were founded in the late 1800's by Father Michael McGivney.  Father McGivney  was a Connecticut native..  He was born and raised in Waterbury.  He celebrated his first Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Waterbury, and was then assigned to St. Mary's Church in New Haven.  This is where the origins of our organization first started to take root.  Father McGivney was later transfered to St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, where continued his efforts in developing the Knights of Columbus.   As part of his duties at St. Thomas, Father McGivney also ministered to Immaculate Conception Church in Terryville.  The church still has many documents from this timeframe, and values them greatly as Father McGivney's cause for sainthood progresses.

Our council (Council 1090) was founded in 1906.  Constance Blum was our first Grand Knight.  We serve three churches - Immaculate Conception Church, St. Casimir's Church, and St. Michael's Byzantine Church.  Throughout the years, we have served our churches and our community well.  We have donated time, talent, and money to many activities throughout our churches and community.
