History

The Catholic Church of Hoisington was started in the home of Joseph Volz with Father Anastastius holding the service.Word traveled fast that a priest had come, and they again could attend services of their faith. Nearly every month, for eight years, services were held in the same place.
The first services held in Hoisington in January of 1888 were at East First, the home of Thomas Johnston. The same chalice was in use until about 1972. It bore the inscription "Pray for the donor".
The alter stone and candlesticks were also used until that time. It was 1893 that they built their first church.
The parish rectory was completed and in the fall of 1907 the church recieved its first resident pastor. A new brick and stone church was constructed at the same site of Fifth and Main.
In 1931 a school was built on property one block east of the church. First classes were held in 1931. The church convent and rectory are also on the church property.
In May 1951, word was recieved from Rome that the southwest protion of Kansas, which included Hoisington, would be in the diocese of Dodge City, Kansas.
