St. Thomas a'Becket

The Sacrament

Through Baptism, God takes us into His own life, the Life of The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God also makes us members of His Special Family, The Church. Through the Sacramental Signs of life-giving water, the words of the minister and the faith of the Church members present, the newly baptized person is remade into a further image of the love of God and the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Preparation for Baptism

Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism for their child must first reflect on their own relationship with the Church and their readiness to have their child baptized. Therefore, parents must be registered members of St. Thomas a'Becket who are practicing their faith regularly.

Godparents are to be chosen on the basis of their commitment to living the Catholic Faith. Parents (and Godparents, if possible) are expected to attend the baptismal preparation classes offered by our parish. (Check the bulletin for a monthly schedule of Baptisms and Preparation for Baptism classes.)

Baptism for Adults

Adults are normally prepared for Baptism/Confirmation through the process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). This takes an indeterminate amount of time and preparation, depending on the background and readiness of the individual. Contact Alan Arnett at (734) 981-1333 if you have any questions regarding RCIA.

Celebrating the Sacraments

The Sacrament is celebrated twice monthly usually after Noon Mass. Sometimes Baptism is celebrated during weekend liturgies. Parent / Godparents prepartation classes required. Celebration dates are printed in the weekly Chancellor. Call Debbie Miller at the parish office at (734) 981-1333 to make arrangements prior to Baptism time wanted.
