In a public school, teachers report to a principal, principals report to a superintendent, and the superintendent reports to a board of education.

At Christ the King school, we all report to a much higher authority.

The information on these following pages is written for the parents and the students of Christ the King Elementary and Middle Schools. It is our on-line Parent-Student handbook. If you're just thinking about enrolling your child, we invite you to start by reading our "Why Christ the King School?" pages and then returning here. There is a considerable amount of information that you can gleam by reading "between the lines" of our policies and practices.

Philosophy
Christ the King School is an educational community that is committed to bringing a quality Christian education to our students, who like ourselves, are making their journey through life with a constant focus on the next. Our school is dedicated to encouraging each student to achieve his/her maximum potential and to assist them in the development of their faith in Christ. We work to stimulate the spirit of inquiry, the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, and the thoughtful formulation of worthy goals by helping them to see the relevance of a Christian value system in their daily lives, as well as an understanding of the Roman Catholic faith, which is our heritage.

Our school is dedicated to assisting parents, the source from whom children and youth derive their values. We are committed to assisting these parents in fulfilling their obligation for the Christian formation and education of their children.

We consider the school community an integral part of the parish whose people it serves, and a vital force for preparing future civic and church leaders and we are dedicated to assisting them in becoming responsible members and leaders within these various communities.

As a Catholic school, we are committed to professional excellence as we strive to create a Christian environment which promotes sound moral and professional judgment.

Expression of Parental Concern

It is important that the lines of communication between home and school be kept open. If a parent has a concern dealing with school related issues, a process can be helpful to ensure communication.

1. Whenever possible, express any classroom concern directly to the teacher.
2. In the Middle School, if the concern still needs further consideration, please contact the Middle School Coordinator.
3. If the concern still needs further attention, in either the Elementary or Middle School, contact the principal.
4. Teachers are available to receive parents each day at the following times:

7:45 to 8:00 a.m. and 2:40 to 3:00 p.m.

Guidance Services
Christ the King School provides guidance services based on the belief that each person is unique. The Guidance Director advocates for the needs of each student in cooperation with administration, faculty, parents, students and community agencies. Guidance services cover a range of areas including : testing and interpretation of results, student referrals, parenting, crisis intervention, records reviewing and self esteem enhancement. The guidance counselor is available to students and parents informally or by appointment daily.

Parent-Teacher Club
Christ the King School's "Parent Teacher's Club" (PTC) is a necessary and vital link for effective Catholic education at Christ the King. The PTC's goal is to promote communication and cooperation between home and school in a variety of ways. The PTC works to:
* provide informative educational programs for parents
* coordinate volunteer services within the school
* provide hosts/refreshments for various school gatherings
* raise funds to assist in maintaining low tuition
* advance technology in school
* develop communications with alumni and friends

The Athletic Association
The Athletic Association of Christ the King School is composed of parents who initiate and direct the sports programs. They are also responsible for raising the money to fund these programs. Any parent willing to support the athletes is welcome to join. Meetings are usually held the last Wednesday of the month in the main office conference room.

Tuition
The tuition rate is established each year based on the operating budget and it reflects the actual per pupil cost of the operation of the school. Christ the King Parish carries the costs of capital expenditures with regard to building and property. These costs are not reflected in the operational budget upon which the tuition is based.

Tuition for the 1999-2000 school year is $1,900. per pupil. This amount does not reflect the actual cost this year, which is higher than $1,900. The balance will be supplied through the fund-raising efforts of the Parent-Teacher Club. A $50. non-refundable deposit is paid at the time of registration. This is not an extra fee and is deducted from the tuition amount due.

Assistance

Active Members of Christ the King Parish may apply for scholarship aid if they have a need for assistance. These applications are reviewed in March of each year by The Parish Scholarship Committee. Applications are available from the Office of the Business Manager.

Members of other Catholic parishes may apply to their own parish for assistance, if they have need. The CKS Endowment Fund, through annual fund raising efforts, will provide scholarship aid for needy CKS students starting the school year 2001-20002.

All tuition and fees must be paid prior to the end of each semester. Failure to do so will result in withholding the child's report card and no records will be transferred out of the school.

Methods of payment:
You may choose one of the following payment plans:

Plan A: Full payment on July 15 (before the school year begins)
Plan B: Half tuition by July 15 before school year begins and half tuition by January 15 during the school year.
Plan C: A 1O month payment schedule (July-May) through the F.A.C.T.S. Tuition payment plan, whereby increments are automatically deducted from your bank account with your written permission.

Fund Raising Efforts
Because of the high cost of education, it is necessary to engage in fund raising events throughout the year. Christ the King is a private school, church related, and therefore, cannot be subsidized by tax money. The PTC sponsors these drives, and they are generally announced at the beginning of the year. Your name, address, and phone number may be available to PTC volunteers through the school office for such purposes.

If you desire it keep your address or phone private you must inform the Principal in writing.

Everyone needs to participate and support these efforts in some way. Active participation enhances the education of all our children. Any and all fund raising projects in the name of Christ the King must be presented first to, and approved by, the Christ the King School Board. Any support group and/or booster club working with or using the name of Christ the King School must present an annual budget and year end financial report.

Student Withdrawl
Once a student has withdrawn during the school year, he/she may not apply for readmittance until the following semester.

Attendance
One criteria of a student's success in school is regular and punctual attendance. Frequent absences may lead to poor academic work, lack of social development and possible academic failure. No single factor may interfere with a student's progress more quickly than frequent tardiness or absence.

Christ the King School has 185 attendance days. If a student is absent from school, the parents are requested to call the Main office (ext. 117) before 9:00 a.m. After a student has been absent, it is necessary for the parent/guardian to send a written excuse to school. Students should give these written excuses to their homeroom teachers.

As teachers of Christ the King School, are attempting to teach your child to be responsible. It is important that your student arrive on time. Parents will be contacted if students are frequently tardy.

In the Middle School, when a student arrives between 8:00 and 8:15 a.m., he/she is to go directly to his/her homeroom and be marked tardy. After 8:15 the student should report to the Main Office with a written excuse from his/her parent/guardian explaining the reason for the tardiness. The student will be sent directly to class.

Absence / Make-up Work
When a student is absent from school for any reason, that student is required to make up all work missed in each class. This means all work done during the missed class time and any related homework.

The student is allowed one day, for each day absent, to make up work. Extensions may be granted by individual teachers when it is deemed necessary. It is always advisable for parents to check assignments. Make up tests must be scheduled with the teacher.

In the Middle School, it is requested that a parent of a student who is absent from school collect the homework assignment sheet from the Homeroom teacher after 2:40 p.m. in the Middle School building. If a second days absence or more is anticipated, it is advisable to ask the Middle School Coordinator to prepare extended assignments.

Cancellation of School and Early Emergency Dismissals
In the event of school cancellation due to weather or other circumstances, announcements will be made from the local radio stations, WSYB, WJJR, Cat Country and Channel 15 Rutland television, beginning at approximately 6:00 a.m. It is requested that parents and students listen to the radio when weather appears threatening rather than call the school.

Discipline
In order to maintain an environment of care, safety and respect for all in our school community, there are occasions when discipline procedures may be needed. Christ the King School uses the Glasser Method and Cooperative Discipline as resources in the discipline of students. In the first instance, the classroom teacher is responsible for any disciplinary action taken within the classroom. Most discipline situations are resolved at this level. If the matter requires additional attention in the Middle School, the Middle School Coordinator may be involved with grades six, seven, and eight. If necessary, in either building, the next action taken will involve the Principal. In any of these instances, if it is appropriate that the student remain after school to do any type of school service, the parent will be called and notified.

Student Council members (class officers and representatives) are expected to be role models to their peers. They are held to a higher accountability for their actions. If they frequently require disciplinary action of any kind, they may be removed from their office. Their behavior is subject to review by the Principal.

Athletic Association Policy on Sports Player Discipline

1. At the time of the first problem, the coach will warn the player that if the problem recurs, the player may ultimately be dismissed from the team.

2. If there is a second problem with the player, the coach will alert the Athletic Director. A written report will follow. The president will maintain a record of this and further proceedings. The president of the Association, coach and principal will be notified, and the Director/coach will notify the player's parents. There will be an immediate one-game suspension.
b. A third occurrence of a problem with the player will result in dismissal from the team/sport.
The coach will inform the Principal of each phase of the process.

Students will be given a verbal warning before they remain after school. For minor infractions a verbal warning may be given rather than a consequence. Information on uniforms and/or purchasing is available anytime through CKS main office.

Homework & Papers
Homework is assigned as an extension and reinforcement of skills and activities introduced in the classroom situation. Middle School Schedule
Mondays through Thursdays are block days. This means that students will have all seven subject areas and physical education, music, library and art for the 6th grade and art as an elective for the 7th and 8th grades within a two day cycle. Block periods are seventy-five minutes in length. The Monday and Wednesday Blocks repeat. The Tuesday and Thursday Blocks repeat.

On Monday and Wednesday, from 12:35 to 1:20, students are in their homerooms Having SSR (sustained silent reading) until 1:20. On Tuesday and Thursday, from 12:35 to 1:20 all middle school students are enrolled in an Activity Period. Activity Periods offer many extra-curricular offerings such as Drama, set and costume design, Art (calligraphy and lettering and other special projects), a sport such as football, volleyball, basketball, tennis or study hall, chorus, chess and cribbage, videos for Girl Talk, Geography-Bee and tutoring in the primary grades to name a few. These offerings are designed to meet the special needs of middle school students as each student is striving to explore various avenues to find out "who I am" and "what I might like to do in the future". The Middle School student needs to belong, and these activities encourage community and cooperation.

On Fridays, a seven-period day of forty-five minutes each is conducted. During the Activity Period time frame all students are in homerooms for a study hall where they may ask for passes to see any of their teachers regarding an academic matter.

For the specific details of your student's schedule, please see the two colored schedule sheets in your student's binder. Modified schedules, due to special events in the day, are posted on the board of your student's homeroom the day of the event.

Telephones
School telephones are for business purposes. Students may use the phone only for emergencies. Arrangements for after school hour activities should be made at home before coming to school. We ask that parents call and leave messages for their child only when it is absolutely necessary. The gym pay phone is for student use when school is closed and gym functions are in operation.

Vacations
Major school vacations are scheduled during Christmas, February and April. Students are not expected to be absent from school for special vacations except for regularly scheduled school holidays. Absences due to special vacations and trips outside the regularly scheduled vacation periods minimize the value of school and should be avoided. It is virtually impossible to reclaim the benefits of the group interaction and instruction that occur during valuable class time. It is also disruptive to the educational process of other students when vacationing students return and are not up-to date in their assignments or do not understand the material.

In the event that you must take your child out of school you must notify the principal two weeks prior to your departure. You will be required to complete a planned absence assignment form to be presented to your child's teacher(s). This form will be sent home with the student the day prior to his/her absence.
