MOTHERS’ DAY

First Reading Acts 151-2. 22-29

Our reading gives us the context for the first Council of Jerusalem to deal with tension between Jews and Christians.

Second Reading  Apocalypse 2110-14. 22-23

Another vision of St John about the heavenly Jerusalem which reassures the Christians of God’s faithfulness to the Church.

Gospel Reading   John 1423-29

In today’s reading we hear the first words of the Holy Spirit, whom the Father would send in the name of Jesus to be with us for all time.

Psalm   Let all the peoples praise you, O Lord, let all the peoples praise you.

(verses read)

O God, be gracious and bless us
and let your face shed its light upon us.
So will your ways be known upon earth
and all nations learn your saving help.   R

Let the nations be glad and exult
for you rule the world with justice.
With fairness you rule the peoples,
you guide the nations on earth.  R

Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you.
May God still give us his blessing
till the ends of the earth revere him.  R

A mother’s love is like God’s unconditional love for us.

Gospel Reflection

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY

God of Holy People, God of Sarah, Ruth and Rebecca, God of Elizabeth mother of John, God of Holy Mary mother of Jesus, bend down your ear to this request and bless all your daughters – our mothers and friends.  Bless them with the strength of your spirit, they who have taught your children how to stand and how to walk.  Bless them with the melody of your love, they who have shared how to pray to you.  Bless them with a place at your eternal dinner table, they who have fed and helped to nurture life. Bless them today, now in this lifetime, with good things, and with health.  Bless them with joy, love, laughter and pride in their children and surround them with many good friends.  May they who have carried and helped in nurturing life be one day carried to your divine embrace;  there, for all eternity, to rejoice with their family and friends.  This blessing and all graces we pray, descend upon all your daughters; in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Amen.

ENTRANCE

GATHER US IN   GA  526

1.        Here in this place new light is streaming,
now is the darkness vanished away,
see in this space our fears and our dreaming,
brought here to you in the light of this day.

Gather us in the lost and forsaken,
gather us in the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken,
we shall arise at the sound of our name.

2.        We are the young— our lives are a mystery
we are the old— who yearn for your face,
we have been sung throughout all of history,
called to be light to the whole human race.

Gather us in the rich and the haughty,
gather us in
— the proud and the strong;
give us a heart so meek and so lowly,
give us the courage to enter the song.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION  Celtic Alleluia.

Alleluia!  All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia!

GIFTS

Prayer of St Francis GA 490

1.      Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me bring your love.
Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord,
and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

2.      Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness, only light,
and where there’s sadness, ever joy.

3.      Oh, Master, grant that I may never seek

so much to be consoled as to console.
To be understood as to understand.
To be loved as to love with all my soul.

4.      Make me a channel of your peace.

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving of ourselves that we receive,
and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

COMMUNION

LOVE IS HIS WORD  GA 462

1.      Love is his word, love is his way,

feasting with all, fasting alone,

living and dying, rising again,

love only love is his way.

Refrain

Richer than gold is the love of my Lord,

better than splendour and wealth.

2.      Love is his way, love is his mark,

sharing his last Passover feast,

Christ at his table, host to the twelve,

love only love is his mark.    R

3.      Love is his mark, love is his sign,

bread for our strength, wine for our joy.

“This is my body, this is my blood”.

Love only love is his sign.    R

4.      Love is his sign, love is his news,

“do this” he said, “lest you forget,

all my deep sorrow, all my dear blood”

love only love is his news.    R

5.      Love is his news, love is his name,

we are his own, chosen and called,

family brethren, cousins and kin.

 Love only love is his name.   R

6.      Love is his name, love is his law.

Hear his command, all who are his

“Love one another, I have loved you”.

Love only love is his law.    R

7.      Love is his law, love is his word,

love of the Lord, Father and Word,

love of the Spirit, God ever one.

Love only love is his word.    R

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling  GA 463

1.      Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven to earth come down!
Fix in us your humble dwelling,
all your faithful mercies crown.

Jesus, source of all compassion,
love unbounded, love all pure;

visit us with your salvation,
let your love in us endure.

2.      Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all your life receive;
suddenly return and never,
never more your temples leave.

Lord, we would be always blessing,
serve you as your hosts above,
pray, and praise you without ceasing,
glory in your precious love.

3.    Finish then your new creation,
pure and spotless, gracious Lord,
let us see your great salvation
perfectly in you restored.

Changed from glory into glory,

till in heaven we take our place,
till we sing before the almighty
lost in wonder, love and praise.

DISMISSAL

Jesus, In Your Heart We Find  GA464

Refrain

Jesus, in your heart we find, love of the Father and mankind;

these two loves to us impart divine love in human heart.

1.      May we stand within the fire
of your sacred heart and raise
to our God in joyful choir
all creation’s song of praise.  R

2.      In our hearts from roots of pride
deadly growths of evil flower;
but from Jesus’ wounded side
streams the sacramental power.  R

3.      To the depths within your heart
draw us with divine desire,
hide us, heal us, and impart
your own love’s transforming fire.  R
