Education

The Education Commission provides a wide variety of faith education programs in our parish community. Faith education is a 'cradle to grave' journey. It is through Baptism that we commence a life-long relationship with Jesus Christ. At Baptism, our parents were asked: "You have come here to present this child for Baptism. In doing so, you are accepting the responsibility of training him/her up in the practice of the faith.

It will be your duty to bring him/her up to keep God's commandments, as Christ has taught us by loving God and our neighbour. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?" Our Education Commission strives to provide a wide variety of opportunities to nurture the seed of faith. These opportunities extend from 'cradle to grave'. FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

Children's Sacramental Programme
As a community united in prayer and spirit, all members of Holy Cross Parish are responsible for the preparation of our children for the Sacraments of Penance, Confirmation and First Eucharist. The Church's Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Our Sacramental Programme is parish and family-based (rather than school-based). The overall coordination and administration of the programme is managed through the parish office. Generally, children are eligible for the celebration of these Sacraments from Year 4 of their formal education. The celebration of the Sacraments is linked into the liturgical cycle of the Church year. The Sacramental Programme commences in October and journeys through Christmas, with the celebration of the Sacraments in the Easter Season of the following year. Reconciliation is celebrated in Lent (usually March) and Confirmation/First Eucharist is celebrated in the period immediately following Easter (April). In addition, HCP offers after school Catechesis to assist parents and children in their understanding of these great treasures in the Church's life.

First Reconciliation

Children in Year 4 or above are eligible to celebrate their Reconciliation. (Children are in Year 3 during the prior October launch of the programme). Reconciliation is celebrated as a Communal Rite - all parishioners, families and friends are welcome to attend. Children are prepared for the Sacraments by parents assisted with activity sheets, after school Catechesis, workshops and other resources from the parish. The child's initial Reconciliation is celebrated as a Communal Rite on an evening during the final week of Lent. The First Rite of Reconciliation (face to face) is delayed until upper-primary.

Confirmation and First Eucharist
In accordance with the Sacramental Policy of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Confirmation is celebrated with First Communion. Children are eligible for Confirmation and First Eucharist after celebrating Reconciliation. Older children who have celebrated First Eucharist but not Confirmation are also eligible. Parish practice celebrates Confirmation on a Friday evening (with family, friends and a special parish supper!). Children share in their First Eucharist on the following Sunday with the whole parish community. These Sacraments are celebrated in Eastertide - between Easter and Pentecost.

Kids for Christ
State School Catechetics Half of our Catholic children attend state schools or other Christian schools apart from SCCC. There are a number of dedicated Catechists who meet with these school children every Thursday night in the Parish Hall for faith formation. They also provide a grounding in the Catholic tradition. To join in this rewarding ministry requires only a loving heart, some spare Thursday nights, a love of God, and an appreciation of the simplicity of a child's thinking. Co-ordinator: Helen Dowling.

Masses for School Age Children
The Parish Pastoral Council have endorsed a policy centering Masses for school age children around the parish (rather than the school). This inclusive policy is family-based and includes those children in the parish attending other Christian and state schools. Copies of the policy are available at the parish office. Also available is the document "Guidelines for Celebrating Eucharist with Small Groups".
