What is heaven like? The truth is we can’t know for sure. The scriptures only give us a glimpse; it is as if we are only allowed to touch its cloak but that is all. The other question to ask is: What is God like? The scriptures have much more to say about this. God is love (1 John 4:16) and those who live in love live in God. So when we love we are experiencing something of heaven. St Augustine said., “He who is filled with love is filled with God himself.” Love then is the currency of the heavenly life. As St John explains: “Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. “So to know something of heaven on earth we need to love, forgive and serve.
Lord, the road to heaven is paved with acts of love and self-sacrifice. Teach me to lay down my life in love and service of others.
