Prayer Group

The first meeting of the prayer group took place on Thursday 7th October 2004 in the parish hall.  Five people came along, none of whom, perhaps surprisingly, had ever been to a prayer group before.  So we were all rather shy and a little nervous, especially since Sister Brenda was unable to attend at the last minute.  However, Father John stepped into her shoes and guided us along.

Sister Brenda had left us with an outline of her plans for the first gathering:

Opening prayer
Gospel reading-Martha and Mary, Luke 10 v38, read slowly

In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.  She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking.  Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said “Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself?  Please tell her to help me.”  But the Lord answered: “Martha, Martha,” he said “you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one.  It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.”

Silence
Gospel reading, read a second time
Share our thoughts on the reading
Invite everyone to say a prayer

Father John spoke about the history of prayer groups and how valuable such groups are in parishes today.  Many people in our parish need our prayers at various times in their lives and it can be a comfort to know that prayers will be offered for them, not only at Mass but also within the prayer group.

For those attending the prayer group, there is the opportunity to pray about and talk about a passage from scripture in peace and quiet, away from the phone, the television, the children and life’s other distractions. Afterwards we can chat and get to know one another better.
