Welcome To:

Society of St. Vincent DePaul

Saint Mary Conference
133 School Street
Waltham, MA. 02451

On the occasion of our 100th year of service in 1984, we made our initial appeal for your material and spiritual support in our efforts to provide assistance to families and individuals.

Once again you have heard our call on behalf of the poor among us. The generosity of donors and benefactors has allowed us to expend over $2,600 each month this past year and we anticipate we will need over $3,000 each month in the coming year.

Rejoice with us.  Read Our Story, Our Report, and Our Appeal.  Please respond with love and charity so we can continue to answer the many calls of the poor and the hopeful in our city.

Our Story - Our Report - Our Appeal

The St. Vincent dePaul Society at St. Mary's began in January, 1884.  Vincentians throughout the world witness Christ's love for humanity by person-to-person involvement with those who suffer material or moral want. No work of charity is foreign to the St. Vincent dePaul Society that was founded by Blessed Frederick Ozanam.  St. Vincent dePaul is our Patron Saint.  Our members, Catholic lay persons all, provide direct and confidential assistance to anyone in need while promoting human dignity.

Both the needs of individuals and the scope of assistance given by the St. Vincent dePaul members here at St. Mary's have grown tremendously over the past twenty years and very much so this past year!

We receive and respond to all calls from the poor among us who are in need of food or help with their rent, utility or medical bills.  From October, 2001 to September, 2002 (our fiscal year) we provided 225 families with $24,826 in 924 food vouchers (a 22% increase over last year!) and another $7,115 (a 75% increase!!) in assistance for other necessities including back-to-school supplies and clothing.   We are especially proud to be part of the Waltham High Student Santa Program since its inception in 1985 as well as of the Giving Tree at St. Mary's.  Last Christmas we humbly distributed donated gifts valued at over $18,000 to 294 children!

Our clothing distribution center at the rear of 20 Pond Street is open daily and ten families each week come for clothing and household donations we receive from others.   The large clothing bin in the parking lot is emptied two or three times each week and its contents are redistributed to other people in need elsewhere from St. Vincent DePaul's distribution center in Stoughton.

We rejoice in the knowledge that many parishioners and many other individual donors generously provided our Conference with $24,827 (a 24% increase!) last year in direct contributions to the Society, of which over $5,758 was received in the poor boxes at the doors of the Church and $2,725 from donations in memory of our long-time Vincentian brother, Bernie Connaughton, and a benefactor, Agnes Coleman.  We also sponsor the McNamara Memorial Golf Tournament each year and the proceeds last May exceeded $7,185.  Of the total $32,012 we received, 100% was distributed in direct aid to those whom we were able to help in our community.  All printing and mailing costs are absorbed from interest income or solidarity donations by our members.

We acknowledge the support and guidance of our Pastor, Father Verrill, who serves as our spiritual advisor, as well as the parish staff and all who provide us with their prayers that we may make the right judgements in dispensing your gifts to the Christ who comes to us in the poor and disadvantaged. "Whatever you do for one of these, the least of my brothers and sisters, I consider it done to me!" (Matthew 25). How true then and how equally true today here at St. Mary's!

We humbly ask our past donors for your increased financial support again this year and appeal to others to help us help people when they call for food.  We appreciate whatever help you can give for the needy.  100% of your gift goes to those who come to St. Mary's with real needs.  Your donation continues to be 100% tax-deductible and will be promptly acknowledged.
