St. Athanasius Church

On January 19, 1961, at 12:01 AM, by decree of Richard Cardinal Cushing, St. Athanasius Parish, Reading, came into being. Almost 49 years later the Parish is formulating plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary. A planning committee, made up of a wonderful group of parishioners, has been meeting and discussing various possibilities for celebrating the anniversary throughout 2011. Here is a schedule of events that has thus far been put into place:

• Sunday, March 13th - Anniversary lecture presented by Sister Carol Zinn, a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia.
• Sunday, May, 15th - Anniversary Mass with Cardinal Sean O’Malley as principal celebrant
• Saturday, June 18th- Anniversary Dinner at Hillview Country Club
• Saturday, August 27th- Day of Service and Parish Picnic
• Monday – Wednesday, December 12 – 14- Parish Mission presented by Father Robert Joerger, a Passionist priest from New York

Securing the above participants and facilities has required long-range planning. We are fortunate to have these programs and activities in place. Put the dates in your calendar NOW.

In anticipation of the anniversary celebration, we are now selling a commemorative ornament to all our parishioners and friends. The ornament is a beautiful keepsake and will raise funds needed to meet expenses for the anniversary.

More details about the anniversary will be reported in the months to come.

St. Athanasius Church was designed by the architectural firm of Louis A. Scibelli and Daniel F. Tully in 1959. The church, when designed, was the largest "Hyperbolic Paraboloid" roof shell in the Western Hemisphere and perhaps the world at that time. Its stained glass windows were fabricated by Tolleri of Florence, Italy from the designs of Scibelli and Tully. The original altar was designed to be in the abstract form of an Alpha and Omega symbolic of the quote in the gospel "I am the beginning and the end." On Sale most Sundays from 10-10:30am in the PAC or by calling Cindy Canavan at 781-872-0042
