In 1946, the women of the parish formed the Guild as an organization
to encourage spiritual development and parish service. In 1954, the
Guild changed its name and focus to the Blessed Virgin Sodality of
St. Anne Parish. Its purpose, to foster devotion to the Blessed
Virgin Mary through prayer and good works, remains as important
today as it was in those early days.
Over the years, the Blessed Virgin Sodality has been a vital part
of the life of the parish and the community. In addition to
sponsoring many spiritual activities, Sodality has been active
in fundraising to help support the needs of the parish.
Today, to accommodate those women whose parishes do not include
a Sodality, the organization has opened its membership to any
Catholic woman, eighteen years and older. New members are
received annually at a special Mass at which time they receive
the Sodality medal. Meetings are held monthly through the year
from September to May. The final meeting in May is generally a
Mass with May procession, induction of new officers, and a
celebratory banquet.
The Executive Board plans programs for the year with the
assistance of the spiritual director. Programs are varied
and aim to inform, entertain, and - most of all - to inspire.
Many programs have served to increase awareness of social
issues and church teachings.
To meet the needs of a variety of schedules, monthly meetings
are held either on a Sunday morning, or on a Tuesday or
Wednesday evening. Meetings begin with either Mass or a
recitation of the Rosary, sometimes followed by Benediction.
In addition to regular meetings, Sodalists have been involved
in many parish and community activities. Accepted parish
activities initiated by the Sodality include making Baptismal
Robes; conducting the Sunshine Club, a monthly meeting
designed to entertain the elderly and offer them a venue for
socialization; administering the Thanksgiving Basket program;
baking and delivering cookies to shut-ins as a Valentine remembrance;
hosting monthly Rosary recitations in member homes; and remembering
the sick or families of the deceased with messages of condolences
and prayers. Many Sodalists also offer their services to assist
at the Neighborhood Supper, visit the nearby nursing home, bring
Communion to shut-ins, recite the Rosary at wakes, and host parish receptions.
