FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Blindness is a very difficult handicap. The blind are dependent in so many ways on others. Even though with Braille, and with seeing-eye dogs, canes and other devices, those who are sightless live in a world of darkness. Jesus heals the blind man in today’s gospel. He had the sight of faith and thus he could see with his eyes. He recognized Jesus without seeing Him. There are many in Jesus’ day who saw Him but really didn’t recognize who He was. Their physical sight was fine, but they did not see beyond “what meets the eye”, as Shakespeare said. Narrowness of vision, in the spiritual sense, hinders our walk. If we refuse to believe in Jesus we have a heart that is blinded by anger, fear, jealousy, resentment, guilt. To open our hearts in faith is to really see our way in life, because we walk with Jesus.

Another question from the Parish Pastoral Council:
QUESTION:
On the front of the weekly bulletin could it say something like: “Come Plan your Wedding and Marriage with Us,” instead of a one-year rule?
ANSWER:
Yes, it could. However, we put the Archdiocesan rule on the cover of the bulletin, for a reason. We do have problems if couples are not informed about the Archdiocesan rule about a year’s preparation. The parish needs time to prepare them for marriage. Couples must attend a marriage preparation program and because of the numbers of couples we limit them to thirty a session. These sessions are held twice a year, in the fall and spring. Secondly, there are several necessary meetings with the priest or deacon. Sometimes the reception is booked first and the next step is to call the rectory to arrange a wedding that fits the scheduled reception. That may not be possible if there are other weddings planned or if the couple cannot comply with the other Church laws regarding marriage, which are many for various situations. Because of the many restaurants in the Woburn area, couples sometimes call to arrange a marriage and they are not from the parish. We cannot marry these couples because we have no jurisdiction. They must receive that from their pastor. The priest has to be sure the couple understands the purpose of marriage and is able to make the commitment for life. We Americans do not have such a good record of that, since 60% of marriages end in divorce.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
