FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Last week Jesus gave us the “Constitution” of His Church, His kingdom in the beatitudes. Today he reveals who they are. They are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt, a precious commodity was expensive and hard to come by. It would never be wasted and was always appreciated. It was used to preserve, to heal, to fertilize and it was used as a covenant sign on all the offerings in the temple. For Israel light was a sign of the Messiah’s kingdom. Light triumphed over darkness, the sin and evil of the world. One little candle can bring light into the darkest room. So it is with us. As salt we bring enthusiasm, joy, sparkle, flavor into the monotonous daily tasks because we are doing them in and for Jesus. As light we can brighten hearts, lift the fog of ignorance, and bring sunshine where there is no hope but only grief and pan.

Here are some more questions from the Parish Pastoral Council:
QUESTION:
IS THERE AN EASTER DUTY REQUIRED BY OUR CHURCH? WHAT IS THE PENANCE REQUIREMENT?
ANSWER:
There is still an Easter duty. One must receive the Eucharist at least once during the Easter season, which for the US is from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday. The Easter duty is Mass and the reception of the Eucharist. The sacrament of reconciliation (Penance) is necessary when one has committed a serious sin and cannot receive the Eucharist. For a serious sin, from Catechism days, the action has to be seriously sinful, the person has to know it is seriously sinful, and yet the person does it anyway. Force, fear, ignorance, addiction, not being fully conscious, are mitigating circumstances which can change an action from mortal (serious) to less serious sin. It is important not to put oneself in circumstances that may be the occasion of temptation.
QUESTION:
WHY DO PEOPLE SIT ON THE ENDS OF THE PEWS SO ALL THE MIDDLES ARE EMPTY AND YOU CANNOT GET THERE?
ANSWER:
I don’t know, you will have to ask them.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
