SECOND COLLECTION

Each year, the annual Peter’s Pence collection in support of the works of the Holy Father, is held on the First Sunday of Lent. Through our works of charity, Catholics provide a quiet but powerful witness of love and deeds to empower the weak, the defenseless and the voiceless, and to sustain those who suffer. Please give generously to this collection next weekend, February 9/10th.

INCOME TAX STATEMENTS

If you would like a statement of your contributions to St. Barbara’s during the year of 2007, please let the secretary in the rectory office know. You can drop in or call her at 781-933-4130.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR FOXWOOD

Our next trip will be on Thursday, April 10th. We will not have any trips during the Lenten season. As usual, the bus will leave the parking lot exactly at 9:30 a.m. (please be prompt) and return approximately between 8-8:30 p.m. The cost is still only $23 per person; but this time you will receive $20 in Keno play and the $15 allowance for lunch/dinner or the free buffet.

For your information, as another on-going church event, on all trips to Foxwoods we donate our profit from the ticket sales to St. Barbara’s to be used toward the upkeep of the Parish. Our last trip on Dec. 6th, resulted in a $446.00 contribution to St. Barbara’s.

Feel free to sign up anytime simply by calling the rectory at 933-4130 or Joe DiSalvo at 933-5994.

1000 CLUB

Several numbers in the 1000 Club have become available and we are looking for new members. This weekend, after all the Masses we will have a table set up at the front doors of the Church for those who are interested in becoming a member of the Club. It is a steady source of income for the Parish.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

ABSTINENCE
Catholics over the age of 14 years are bound to abstain (meat may not be taken at all) on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent.
FASTING
Catholics over the age of 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year must fast. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting – only one full meal is allowed: two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, according to one’s needs. But together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids including milk and fruit juices, are allowed.

LENTEN DISCUSSION GROUP

Won’t you join us to ”Share the Word” following daily Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the church hall during Lent? Our first meeting will be Tuesday, February 12th.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A BAPTISM OF JESUS

This Jesus is not the ordinary preacher or leader of men. If He were running for public office, say the Presidency, He would never make it on a speech like this. He doesn’t emulate the wealthy or powerful, nor does He make speeches about prosperity or military strength, nor does He promise a rosy life without effort and struggle. He is not concerned about material wealth but spiritual values. Paul says He deliberately chooses the absurd, the weak, the lowborn and despised, those who count for nothing so that mankind can do no boasting. God gets the glory for choosing us, the lumbering, imperfect, children He loves. In the beatitudes, as we call them, Jesus describes Himself – poor in spirit, sorrowing, lowly, merciful, single-hearted, persecuted, a peacemaker. Can He count on your vote?

Sincere thanks to all our parishioners and friends, for the expressions of support and sympathy, my family and I experienced from the parishioners of St. Barbara Parish on the occasion of my mother Rachel’s death. We are extremely grateful for the prayers, the spiritual bouquets, the flowers and personal condolences. At such a difficult moment in our lives we truly appreciate your thoughtfulness. God’s love and compassion came to us through all of you. God bless.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
