WORLD DAY OF THE SICK

will be observed on February 11th. Is there anyone sick among you? This question, found in the New Testament Letter of James, gives the response that the sick should call for the priests of the Church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to call our parish’s priest(s) to ask for prayer and the Sacrament of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with serious illness. Also, if someone is dying or near death, please call the parish for pastoral assistance. Anointing of the Sick for St. Barbara’s is held once a month and will be after the 4:00pm Mass on January 26th, and for February anointing will take place after the 7:30am Mass on Sunday, February 24th.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A BAPTISM OF JESUS

John is happy to proclaim Jesus as the Lamb of God who will take away the sins of the world. According to Jewish tradition the Messiah would be announced by Elijah and anointed by him. John was the Elijah. He saw the Spirit come upon Jesus, heard the voice of God call Jesus His chosen one. His mission is over. Now the prophecies have come to fruition, the suffering servant has arrived. Jesus comes not to condemn, but to forgive, not to punish but to embrace sinners, not to exclude but to include all those whose hearts have been moved. John at first did not recognize Him until the Spirit came upon Jesus. We have no trouble recognizing Jesus because His Spirit has come upon us.

Here are some more questions from the Parish Pastoral Council:
QUESTION:
Who can be a deacon? How? How expensive? Any chance there could be training locally?
ANSWER:
Deacon selection takes place first in the parish. A candidate is recommended by the pastor and his pastoral associates. The Regional Bishop is consulted. An application is made to the Deaconate Committee. If the candidate is accepted, it is a five year training. The cost is $6,000.00 per candidate, paid by the Archdiocese. The candidate pays $4,000.00, over and above the $6,000.00. The money comes from Archdiocesan collections, donations and sponsors of the program. The training is very serious and intense and is done at the Seminary. The faculty is chosen from among the Seminary professors. Anyone interested, speak to Deacon Jim.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
