FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Samaritans were the outcasts of Jewish society because in the past their land was invaded and the people were taken us hostages and intermarried with the Assyrians. Since they had intermarried with pagans, their bloodline was not pure Hebrew, so they were rejected. Jesus meets ten lepers. Faces covered, huddled in a group, forbidden to get close to others, they cry out for Jesus to heal them. He sends them on their way to the priests in the Temple. On their way they are cured. One of them, perhaps not even going to the Temple, realizes that he has been cured, and he comes back to thank Jesus. He is a Samaritan. The other nine did not come back, but he did. Now he is sent out as a disciple. We cannot put labels on people because of race, color, or the way they worship, because the 'Samaritans' among us, those we don’t care to associate with, are Jesus’ special concern. No one is forgotten or unloved since He is Lord of all.
Questions from the Parish Council continue:
QUESTION: Can our church be adjusted to allow a better handicapped seating area?
ANSWER: Yes, it can, and we have already done so. The front kneeler, on the left hand side of the Church, down front, has been removed for handicapped seating.
QUESTION: How many times a day does a Priest pray? What is his daily schedule like?
ANSWER: The Priest is bound to say the Breviary every day, the psalms, readings from Scripture, and other sacred writings, which is five times a day. The Breviary is the prayer book of the Church. We use it every morning before the 9:00 a.m. Mass as our morning prayer. Besides those prayers for the universal church, he also sets time aside for meditation, rosary, spiritual reading, and of course daily Mass. During the day there is administrative business to attend to: letters, phone calls, etc. His daily routine may include a wake, a Funeral Mass, a cemetery call. Priests also visit the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, and may spend some time in a school if there is one, or in the Religious Ed. Classes. At night there are various meetings because of the many organizations that make up the spiritual, educational and social activities of the parish. A Priest may have other obligations to the Archdiocese or other related agencies and boards. Priests also have family obligations that occupy his time. And, like everyone else, he needs time for relaxation and renewal, prayer and friendship.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
