FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
The apostles want Jesus to “increase our faith”. Good idea for all of us. Faith is a gift of the Spirit. We did not earn it, deserve it, nor can we purchase it. Faith is given to all the baptized. Sometimes people say: “I can’t do what others do, because I don’t have that kind of faith.” Faith is not magic. Just operate on what you have right now. We can’t wait for some future date when we have “a lot of faith”. That day is today. If you believe in God then you have faith. Where did you come from? Where are you going? Faith and good works go hand and hand. Good works increase people’s faith in God and in you. Faith the size of a mustard seed or a caraway seed is enough to conquer all kinds of problems. Just get going and you will see.
Questions from the parish council continues:
QUESTION: Do the priests receive a salary? What about Medicare and Social Security?
ANSWER: Yes, they do. The Parish pays the salary from the Offertory collection and his room and board. The individual priest pays SS, IRS and the State Tax on his earnings. At 65 he may collect a SS check and, if he is still working, as most priests are, the Archdiocese pays Part B until he is 75 years of age, then Part B comes out of his earnings. When a priest retires he receives a SS check and, hopefully, a monthly retirement check. The amount a retired priest receives in his retirement check depends on whether he lives in a rectory or a nursing facility. However, because of the scandal the Archdiocese took a large amount out of the priest’s retirement fund to pay the victims of pedophilia, which has not been replaced. Those funds come out of the Easter and Christmas collections for priests. Priests are in a “dual category”: for IRS they are considered employees of the Archdiocese; for SS they are considered self-employed which puts them in a higher tax bracket.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.
