BULLETIN BITS

Today’s readings speak of hospitality. Abraham, who cheerfully did for His guests all that desert hospitality required, was rewarded with his heart’s desire – a son. Martha also busied herself with all the details of hospitality, but grudgingly and with complaint. Am I a cheerful or a grudging giver?

IT’S ALL ABOUT GOD’S HEALING LOVE

On Wednesday, August 8th, at 7:30 p.m., and every second Wednesday of the month, at St. Patrick’s Church in Stoneham, Mass will be celebrated followed by a healing service. All are invited. The life-giving presence of Jesus, the Physician of soul and body will be present in the Holy Eucharist.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Martha & Mary are at the center of this gospel reading. Jesus is not saying that one state of life, the contemplative, is better than the active life. In other words, Mary is not closer to Jesus than Martha. Jesus asks Martha and Mary to listen to His word in order to put it into practice. There is a challenge in life: to balance service and contemplation. One is not better than the other. Doing Christ’s work is important, but it is also important that the ”work” of prayer be a part of our lives. Too much Martha (activity) is not good. Nor is too much Mary (contemplation). Our prayer is only as good as what we do for Christ by serving others. Our service is not Christ centered without the anointing of the Spirit in prayer. Remember Jesus at the Last Supper, he combined Eucharist with service, washing the feet of His brothers. There is no discrepancy here. All is done because we are in love with the Lord. It is a privilege to talk and listen to Him but it is also a privilege to serve Him in the person of others. Thus we are Martha and Mary active contemplatives.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
The Woburn Police Department has advised us to notify our parishioners not to leave valuable property in their cars during the Weekend Masses. Put valuables in the trunk. Anything can be stolen that is visible. We are making this statement because there have been thefts at various churches during their services.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.

Mark O’Connell, J.C.D., to its regular weekly meeting at St. Eulalia Parish, 50 Ridge St., Winchester. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. The Rev. FOOD PANTRY

The collection of canned food and nonperishable items will be taken up next weekend, July 28-29. In the summer months donations greatly diminish although the need is usually greater because the children do not get their lunch at school. Their summer food pantry wish list is for canned fruit, canned lunch (Spaghettios, etc.), cereal, coffee/tea, condiments, instant potatoes, jelly, juice, powdered milk, rice mixes, $5 or $10 gift certificates to Market Basket or Stop and Shop.

PROUD2BCATHOLIC

Sean Cardinal O’Malley has endorsed the 7th Annual Festival of this group because the event is centered around our youth but appeals to the whole family. This year’s festival will be on August 11 at the Marist House, 518 Pleasant St., Framingham, from 1 to 9 p.m.
Attendees may attend part or all of the event, as they choose. Nationally recognized singers and witness speakers will present Catholic music and inspiring talks and there will also be an opportunity for confession and adoration. Mass will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.

LIFE LINE SCREENING

We will again be offering a day of life-line screening on Wednesday, August 8th. The complete Wellness Package which includes all four screenings is $129 – this also includes free osteoporosis screening. These tests quickly detect arterial abnormalities which can cause disrupted blood flow. For further information and to make an appointment call 877-792-8480. No appointments are made at St. Barbara’s.
