BULLETIN BITS

“The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy two in today’s Gospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?
(See Luke 10-2)

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Last week Jesus gave some advice as to what He expects from His followers. Today we read in Luke’s gospel that He chose another 72 men besides the apostles to help Him in His ministry. For the Jews the number 72 was a symbol for the Gentile nations. Jesus is including all peoples in His ball for repentance and new life. The 72 men did a splendid preaching and healing, and proclaiming the good news. When they returned they were jubilant and excited for all the good things they had done. It is not hard to work for Jesus. We do not have to do great things, but ordinary things with love and faith. You may say: ”I am not able to do that, because I do not have enough faith or strength.” Yet Jesus says He has taken care of that, He has given us His power and His strength. We can do it if we wish.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN

A LETTER FROM CARDINAL O’MALLEY

to all the parishes of the Archdiocese asking for our support and prayerful assistance as the Archdiocese begins an educational phase of the campaign in support of marriage. He asks:
  1. That you pick up a prayer card found at the entrances of the Church
  2. That you pray each day using this card
The vocation of marriage is in crisis. Over the past 20 years, there has been more than a 60% decline in the number of marriages recorded in the Archdiocese of Boston, down from 12,274 in 1986 to 4,519 in 2006. We can no longer assume or depend on the support and encouragement for marriage that just a generation ago was a mainstay in our culture and society. We must step forward and uphold the marriage of a man and a woman as essential for the good of all people. We ask for your support and prayers with this important work.

THE NEED FOR REST

  • The Bible says that after creating the world, on the Seventh Day, God rested.
Rather than because He was tired, God meant to model for us the need to rest and reflect on a job well done.
  • During His ministry, Christ Himself would withdraw to a “Lonely Place” resting to refresh His spirit.
  • Today, we have more leisure, but feel more stressed.
We have more devices to save labor and time, but panic at the thought of ‘getting behind.’
  • Lord, help me remember when we must rest, reflect, and worship on a Sunday, or on a vacation, and that rest is as needed as all other things in our lives to do a good job for our employer, and for God as well.
