WE REMEMBER AT MASS IN A SPECIAL WAY THIS WEEKEND:
all our deceased loved ones, those whose names are inscribed in our Book of Remembrance, Members of St. Barbara’s Benefactor Society, and the following deceased: Phyllis & Joseph Lacorti; Janet Campbell; William James; Augustine “Gus” Michaels; Jerome & Philomena Cagnina; Manuel Ramirez; Virginia Pollino; Joseph Lunetta.
BULLETIN BITS
Paul & Barnabas encountered both violent rejection and joyful acceptance of the message they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow faithfully is eternal life.

2007 CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE
Next weekend, May 5-6, will be Catholic Appeal Weekend here at St. Barbara’s. God calls each one of us to share our gifts with others for the building up of his kingdom. Cardinal Sean is asking every Catholic household to participate in this year’s Appeal which funds the many programs and services of our Archdiocese. The Catholic Appeal is to our Archdiocese what the Offertory is to our parish – so your participation and support are critical. On Catholic Appeal Weekend we will be showing a video message from Cardinal Sean and asking every Catholic household to make a pledge. Cardinal Sean thanks all the families from St. Barbara’s who contributed to the 2006 Catholic Appeal. Our financial goal is to raise at least $52,500. If we exceed our financial goal, we will receive 25% of all funds raised above goal for use here at our parish. Please know that your participation counts and that all gifts – of whatever amount – matter.
We encourage you to take home an information packet from Mass this weekend so that you can prayerfully consider how you will participate. Those of you who gave to the Appeal last year should also receive a letter this week from Cardinal Sean. Please bring completed pledge forms back to the parish next week to contribute during our pledge collection. Thank you.
LET THE PEOPLE VOTE!
VoteMarriage.org had a great victory on Jan. 2, 2007, when the first vote on the Marriage Amendment, defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman, received the necessary number of votes by the legislators at the Constitutional Convention. The second vote needed to put this Amendment on the ballot in 2008 will take place on May 9, 2007 at the State House. Show your support of this Amendment, to preserve the sanctity of marriage, by attending this Constitutional Convention. A free bus is available from Stoneham. If interested, please call 781-438-2558 for further information.
NEW TWIST ON OLD SAYINGS
- A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.
- You can’t have everything, where would you put it?
- Change is inevitable – except from a vending machine!
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
The scriptures relate two times when Jesus multiplies the loaves and fishes, and two incidents where the Apostles are asked to drop their nets again after fishing all night and catching nothing. Today’s gospel is one of those times when the men are asked to cast their nets into the deep, having fished all night with no catch. It had been quite a month. Jesus is arrested, crucified and buried. Then He rises from the dead, and appears to them. So much to consider, and contemplate. Back in Galilee, they decided to go fishing just to find some peace and relaxation. How great it was to breathe in the fresh air, and to be back to the “old routine.” But it doesn’t last long. After fishing all night without success, Jesus again comes to the rescue. The net is so full of fish that it is at the breaking point. Jesus also has prepared breakfast for them. Peter has a chance to “make up“ for his triple denial. From now on they will be catching people in the net of Jesus’ love.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
