FIFTH ANNUAL TRIBUTE TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER

Thanks from Mary C. Vivolo and her team to all who attended the Fifth Annual Tribute on July 23, 2006. We had a most favorable turnout on that after-noon! We are most pleased with the response! THANK YOU AGAIN!!

ST. BARBARA PARISH RCIA PROGRAM

The Rite of Christian for Adults (RCIA) will begin a new session on Sunday, October 8, 2006. The RCIA program may be of interest to you or someone you know if you find yourself, a friend, or relative in any of the following situations:
  1. You are searching for a church to call your own and you have a general curiosity about the Roman Catholic Church.
  2. You are unbaptized, or baptized in another faith, but seek communion with the Catholic Church.
  3. You are Catholic and attend Mass and other services regularly, but feel you are in need of sacramental preparation for reception of Eucharist or Confirmation.
  4. Other.
Please call the Rectory (781-933-4130) and leave a message for Deacon Jim Kerrigan. He, or someone from the RCIA team, will return the call with registration information and the schedule of meetings on Sunday mornings.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

A lot of money is invested on exercise machines, health spas, and diet plans in America. The medical profession is concerned about the weight problem among our young population. Magazines are dedicated to good health and proper diet. Most news telecasts will have a segment on health. Physical health is very important but so is our spiritual health. We have to be interested in both because our bodies are temples of the Spirit. It is an insult to our Creator when we do not take care of ourselves. The spiritual food we need is the Eucharist and all that entails – a daily “diet” of prayer, reflection, scriptural reading, if possible, and good deeds. It has proven that prayer does help our health, blood pressure and overall wellness. “Without me you can do nothing.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.

BULLETIN BITS

Even though we are told that if we seek the Lord, we shall not want, in the second reading St. Paul reminds us that, thus blessed by the Lord, the good steward should “give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU INVESTED IN IMPROVING YOUR MARRIAGE?

It’s the end of the summer and you’ve spent most of your time focusing on the kids. Now that they are heading back to school, how about giving each other the gift of two nights out together, focused on each other and your relationship? Join us from 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., September 23 and 30 at St. Patrick’s, Stoneham or October 7 & 14 at St. Catherine’s, Norwood and give each other and your marriage the focus and time it deserves! One person wrote on the evaluation, “A program that all couples can benefit from, whether just engaged or married many years.” A workshop for couples that is educational and non-threatening (and even fun)! For more information or to register, please call the Family Life Office at 617-746-5801.

SPECIAL PARISH LITURGICAL EVENTS

ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Sacrament of the Sick will be administered on Sunday, August 27th, at the 7:30 Mass. Who can receive this Sacrament? Those who are chronically ill, are having treatments, or will be having surgery this month. We invite you to come receive the Sacrament of the Sick, a source of strength, healing and grace. If you would like to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, it would be helpful if you tell the priest before Mass.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS

THE CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL –
STRENGTHENING THE CHURCH IN AMERICA
Today’s second collection is the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. This appeal supports the Home Missions — places in the United States where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Some dioceses are terribly short of priests, sisters, and the money needed to run parishes. Please give generously to help your fellow Catholics here in America.

FOOD COLLECTION

NEXT WEEKEND — The Social Concerns “Wish List” includes canned fruit, canned meat (Spam, hash, stew, etc.), juice, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables, canned lunch (spaghettios, Beeferoni, etc.), soup/broth, snacks (cookies, crackers), etc. Donations are greatly appreciated.
