DOMINICAN SISTERS

We are pleased that the Dominican Sisters from West Hartford are returning to St. Barbara’s next weekend, August 19/20, and will bring their home-made bread, apple pies, blueberry pies and brownies. The proceeds of this sale will be used to buy medical supplies for their mission to support the lepers.

YOUNG AT HEARTS

As you know our next trip to Gavin’s Golden Hill House in the Irish Catskills, New York, will take place from September 26 to September 29. The final payment of $319.00 is due at this time. We would appreciate your sending in your payment as soon as possible.

MISSIONARY SOCIETY OF ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE

Today we have a visiting diocesan priest, Father James Jeanfreau, who will give us some insight into the state of the missions in South America. The Society has about 40 members serving in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Each year a few of the members come north to spread the word about their missionary work and to appeal for donations. Please be as generous as your means allow. For more information on the Society of St. James visit their website: www.socstjames.com .

PREP TEACHER NEEDED

Grade 9 PREP is badly in need of a teacher for next year’s program. Please call Ann Cronin if you can help – 781-933-9334.

ADDITIONAL PREP TEACHERS NEEDED

We are also in need of three teachers for Grade 4, which meets Thursday from 3:15 to 4:15 and three teachers for Grade 5 which meets Wednesday from 3:15 to 4:15 in the Church, or classes may be held in your home if that is more convenient. Will you give an hour a week to share your faith with the children of St. Barbara’s? If you would like to be a volunteer, please call Barbara at 781-935-0529. Thank you.

FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 15th. The vigil Mass will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday night, August 14th. There will be three Masses on Tuesday – 9:00 a.m., 12:05 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS

Next weekend, Aug. 19/20, the second collection is for the Catholic Home Missions Appeal which supports places right here in the United States where the Catholic Church struggles just to keep parishes open and to educate children in the faith. Some dioceses are terribly short of priests, sisters, and the money to run parishes. For example, there are only 70 priests in the whole state of Utah, 57 in Idaho, and 45 in Wyoming. It helps build community within the Church and works for the common good of Catholics in the United States. Please give generously to help your fellow Catholics here in America.

ASAP

Do you ever wonder about the abbreviation A.S.A.P.?

There’s work to do, deadlines to meet;
You’ve got no time to spare
But as you hurry and scurry –
ASAP – ALWAYS SAY A PRAYER

It may seem like your worries
Are more than you can bear.
Slow down and take a breather –
ASAP – ALWAYS SAY A PRAYER

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

People are shocked that Jesus calls Himself the “bread come down from heaven.” They know His mother, father and relatives. They do not know Him. He tells them He is the bread come down from heaven. In other words, His whole being is life giving. If we consume the Eucharist, the sacramental body of Christ, which is the closest “thing” we have to Him, then we receive Him. Through this sign He comes to us and we live in Him. It is something real and tangible that He left with us, until He returns in glory. In this way He can be available to all. The Spirit makes this bread His body for us. “Whoever eats this bread will live forever.” We believe and so we celebrate.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
FATHER VIN
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE PARISH SO FAITHFULLY AND WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL TO OUR PARISHIONERS WHO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS.

BULLETIN BITS

The gifts of God that the angel brought to Elijah – food, water, rest and encouragement – were given, not for his good alone, but to strengthen him for service. How am I using my gifts to serve others?

THE POWER OF PRAYER!

During our journey through life, we are called to live through days of loss and suffering. When our bodies hurt, we have recourse to medicine and vitamins. Our hurting hearts, however, can be healed through the mystery and power of prayer. You are invited to come to a special retreat, Sept. 15-17, celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Sorrow at the Franciscan Center, Andover, MA. Keynote speaker is Johnnette Benkovic, author, mother, and TV and radio host. Last year, Johnnette lost her only son who, upon returning from a tour in Iraq, died in a car accident at 18 years of age. Other speakers include Fr. Seraphim Michalenko, MIC, author of many works about Divine Mercy. This is sponsored by the National Apostolate of Prayers for Life in cooperation with Eternal Life Radio. For retreat information, call 781-391-1396 or log onto www.eternalliferadio.org.
