Scholarship Guidelines
Purpose:
The Deacon Francis Chao and Father John Hines Memorial Scholarship is established to recognize outstanding Chinese Catholic students who have demonstrated initiative in giving service to BCCC (Boston Chinese Catholic Community).  The Scholarship also aims to increase the sense of Christian and moral values in young people who are entering college and who will one day become leaders in their community.  The Scholarship is intended for graduating seniors who are going on to college and currently enrolled college students who have shown extraordinary commitment to the BCCC community.
Award:
The Scholarship will be $500 directly awarded to the recipient.
Eligibility:
The applicant must be either attending or accepted by an accredited two- or four-year college for the fall semester of the application year.  The applicant must be a registered member of the BCCC who has shown regular participation.  A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 is required.  SAT scores are required but may be waived for currently enrolled college students.  Previous recipients of this award are not eligible.
Application Process:
The following materials must be received by the Scholarship Committee by May 12, 2013:
A completed Application Form (doc / pdf).
An essay, of one to three typewritten pages, addressing the following:
What does it mean to you to receive this scholarship?
How do you value a college education and how do you relate it to yourself, your family and your community?
A copy of the applicant's high school or college transcript. The transcript must reflect up to at least one term of senior year or up to the most recent semester of college.
Two letters of recommendation:  one from a high school teacher or college professor, and one from an unrelated person who is a member of BCCC. Each signed letter of recommendation must be sent directly to the Scholarship Committee by the recommender.
A copy of SAT scores, as applicable.
High school seniors should submit a college acceptance letter.
Finalists may be invited for an interview.
Criteria to Evaluate Scholarship Candidates (weighted equally):
Academic achievement based on applicant's SAT results (as applicable), GPA and teacher recommendation.
Service to the BCCC community based on record of service and BCCC member recommendation.
Catholic value and moral character based on applicant's essay and recommendations.
Potential for future leadership and commitment to service in his or her own community based on essays and recommendations.  
Announcement of Award:
The award will be determined by members of the Scholarship Committee and will be announced in June 2013.
